… people with children, can you help me?
… the baby I made the snow suit and the baby blanket for is turning 1 this week, I have been invited to a party for him this weekend… I feel like I ought to sew up a gift!
… what do 1 year old boys, or mother’s of 1 year old boys want??
… I was hoping to use fabric I already have, maybe some of colourful African wax, or some jersey. Do small boys wear pyjamas (cotton bottoms, t-shirt top), would a jersey top with cotton sleeves work…
… I will only have half a day at the weekend to work on what ever I decide to make, so a fully fledged button down shirt is probably more than I want to make. I would also prefer a free or not too expensive pattern as I won’t be making many variations…
… any hints or recommendations would be most welcome! Thank you!!… a year ago with the blanket and hat I made him.

What about an appliqued t-shirt that snaps in between the legs? The are always wearing some type of t-shirt no matter the season. The applique would make it personal to the child especially if he likes some kind of animal or toy.
What about an adjustable bow-tie? Or some type of soft toy? Soft letters that spell his name?
Hope that helps keep the ball rolling!

As a mother of a 16 month old, the garments we use ALL THE TIME are things like tshirts that join between the legs with snap fasteners, overalls that have snap fasteners between the legs for easy nappy changes, trousers with elastic waists (easy to get on and off), and hoodies or sweatshirts with open-ended zips up the front (so much easier to get on/off if they open up the front!). Oh, and for the tshirts, ones with envelope necklines are a lot easier to get on over big baby heads. 🙂
Don’t do a button-up shirt – they’re a pain to put on a squirming child. And 1 year old boys (or my one, anyway!) aren’t overly interested in soft toys – they’re nearly at the stage where they want things that do things, like have wheels or make noises or can be pulled along. (If they’re not at that stage yet, they will be very soon!)
🙂

Thanks for the great advice!

My favourite thing for littles is harem pants – really comfy, easy to get on and off over a nappy, good for rolling/crawling/toddling around – and funky!
Also, I just sent you an email 🙂

I’d make a ‘t shirt (homemade or storebought) personal with flockfolie (sorry, don’t know the English name, but you must have heard about it. The kind of velvet stuff you iron on. You could write his name or any kind of animal/object you know he likes. I made my nephews a couple with their names on it and they really loved it (I actually wrote the name, and in small letters (italic) underneath: since 2010, to add a special funny touch).
Pyjamas are great too! At about that age they will indeed start wearing the top/bottom jammies.
Also veeeery nice, but it might take longer then an afternoon, is making a carpet with roads on it. Buy a few little cars to ride the carpet and he’s all set.
I’ll let you know if I come up with more. I have a girl, so I don’t have that much inspiration 😉

Thanks – I am thinking t-shirt and trousers that can be pyjamas or not… maybe styling with flockfolie too, that sounds great – I don’t know it, but hopefully I can find it easily enough – looks like I may be going shopping tomorrow lunch time!

You can find the flockfolie at De Banier!
Good luck & show us what you came up with!!

I’d suggest a simple playmat, or maybe a pyjama eater! If you’re determined on clothing, simple T’s and pull on trousers are in high demand. You could appliqué to create a coordinating set. A present for his mum could be a bright tote bag for all that baby stuff you have to carry.
