… so many great suggestions for quick kids projects, thank you!
… in the end I decided to quickly whip up a pair of best harem pants, as per Jo’s recommendation and an envelope necked t-shirt as recommended by Kat…
… easy!?
… or not!
… after going through my jersey collection I decided I needed something a bit more fun and kidsy, so Friday after work I rushed by the fabric shop, put my blinkers on and headed straight to the back where I know the kid’s fabric is… it was sales, things had been moved, cursed sales lady sent me back to the front of the shop, I was trying not to see the adult jersey reduced to 5€/m, I returned to the back of the shop looking for the kid’s stuff with 2 bolts tucked under my arm…
… mother is a sailor, we both work in marine stuff, pirates seemed the obvious choice… I left the shop quickly before I accidentally picked up anything else!
… patterns printed and taped up – wow – 3 pages of A4 for a pair of trousers, I can see the attraction of sewing kid’s clothes! Plus both items fitted on two lengths of fabric 50cm each…
… I made the trousers first, easy enough, until I notice I had sewn the waist band on inside out – duh… this would be the first of many sessions with my unpicker…
… for the t-shirt I used smalldreamfactory’s envelope t-shirt pattern, and I really struggled with the neck… so much so, I actually made the t-shirt 3 times and then took it all apart as I was never happy with how the neck lay. It still isn’t perfect, but in the end I gave up! So much for a quick couple of hours project, it took me the better part of the day…
… at least the mother loved them, the birthday boy was far more interested in a plastic toy with flashing lights!

They’re so cool! I totally missed the pirate fabric, and in a knit too! Hmm, maybe I feel a return trip coming on… From here the envelope neck tee looks fine to me, but there’s nothing like having made it yourself for seeing the flaws! I made a couple with that pattern a few months ago and remember it was quite fiddly. Those pattern pieces are just so small – AND they’re curved 🙂

that was absolutely my feeling – once I had gotten over the thrill of so few pages to tape and so little fabric – everything is so fiddly!! And don’t forget that was the third time I remade the t-shirt, so I was getting plenty of practice at sewing it (and taking it apart!)!

I think it’s a lovely present! I always find it more difficult to sew small things… I love your fabric choices!

Thanks, I agree, kids clothes are so fiddly, I have a whole new level of respect for people who make them!!!

Absolutely adorable!! I’m glad the neck finally came out ok. Do you think it was an issue of the pattern or of the nature of the knit fabric? I’ve been having a heck of a time trying to sew with knits. I just finished my gunmetal and, once again, had issues with the knit fabrics. I just blogged it so you can see more info there, and if you have any sewing with knits tips, please feel free to share them.

Thanks – I confess I found the instructions about the neck a little confusing and “light weight”, and this from someone who doesn’t usually really read the instructions, so I kind of tried to improvise, but the fact it is all curved, you can’t stretch the piece and it is tiny made it really fiddly.. Usually I don’t have too much of an issue with knits, I just use a zig zag stitch, double needle for hems and more recently the serger! I did read this great interview this week that may be useful: http://www.made-by-rae.com/knits/
